Understanding Kratom
A brief guide to the origins, traditional uses, and varieties of Mitragyna speciosa.
What is Kratom?
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family, native to Southeast Asia. For centuries, the leaves of this tree have been used traditionally by local populations in countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea.
Traditionally, the leaves were chewed or brewed into a tea by laborers and farmers to help them navigate long, demanding work days. Today, it is commonly available in powdered form or capsules.
The Strains
Kratom is generally categorized by the color of the veins in the leaves at the time of harvest. Each color represents a different stage of maturity and is traditionally associated with different profiles.
White Vein
Harvested early in the leaf's lifecycle. Traditionally chosen by those looking for an uplifting experience or an energetic start to their day.
Green Vein
Harvested at the midpoint of maturity. Often described as the "middle ground," traditionally used for a balanced experience.
Red Vein
Harvested at full maturity. Traditionally selected by those seeking a more relaxing or soothing experience, often used toward the end of the day.
